What’s My Eye Shape?
You probably haven’t considered your eye shape, or whether or not it even matters, unless you’ve tried a new eye makeup look and realized it didn’t actually work for your particular eye shape. It can be incredibly frustrating to try different makeup tips only to find that the actual shape of your eye won’t allow you to get the same result you see in the tutorial.

10 Eye Shapes
It’s more than just eye shapes. Your eye shape and eye look are also affected by the position of your eyeball inside your eye socket.
You may find that you have a combination of several shapes, which can help you better scout out makeup and lash looks that work best for you. To find your eye shape, all you need is a mirror and this helpful guide.
Looking in the mirror, consider the following features of your eyes:
- The overall shape of the eye. Look at the entire perimeter of your eye. Is it more round or slanted?
- The position of the outer corners of your eyes. Does the outer corner of the eye turn upward toward your brow bone or angle downward toward your cheek?
- Your upper eyelid. How much available space is there on your upper eyelid? Can you see a lot of your lid or only a small portion? Is there a visible crease in your eyelid, or is your eyelid smooth?
Now that you’ve taken a good look at your eyes, read on to determine what types of eye shapes are most common and which are most like your own eyes.
1. Almond-Shaped Eyes
Eyes that are wide in the middle and taper toward the inner and outer corners are almond-shaped. People with almond eye shapes have irises that meet the top of their upper lids and lower lids, so the whites of the eyes are not visible at the top or bottom of the iris when looking straight ahead.
Almond eyes are thought to be the most common eye shape, but you’ll find slight variations of this shape that can make almond-shaped eyes appear very different. It’s also possible to have a combination of eye shapes. For instance, you might have almond eyes that are also wide-set.
Keep that in mind as we move into the next nine shapes.
2. Round Eye Shape
Round eyes are, as you might suspect, shaped more like a soccer ball than a football. Round eyes are as wide as they are tall, and typically, the white of your eyes is visible around the entire eyeball.
Round eyes, like almond eyes, may have other eye shape features, so it’s important to consider the other aspects of your eyes before determining that they are only round, not round and hooded, or round and upturned, etc.
3. Hooded Eyes
Having hooded eyes refers to the shape of the person’s eyelid. If you have hooded eyes, your eyelids will be barely visible when you look directly into the mirror. This means your brow bone is positioned slightly lower and more prominently over your eyes, or there is an additional fold of skin underneath the brown bone that masks the remainder of your eyelid.
Aging eyes often develop lids that “droop,” so it is possible to develop hooded eyes over time, although some people are born with them. Even if you don’t have a lot of eyelid real estate, there are still ways to get great makeup and lash looks using tricks and techniques to make your eyelids appear more visible than they are.
4. Downturned Eyes
Looking at your eyes, focus on the outer corners. Do the outer corners of your eyes tilt downward toward your cheekbones? If so, you likely have downturned eyes.
It’s very possible to have a certain eye shape, like almond eyes or round eyes, that are also downturned. Downturned eyes often look kind and compassionate and are nicknamed “puppy dog” eyes.
5. Upturned Eyes
When inspecting those outer corners, you may have noticed that they turn slightly upward toward your temples. If so, you have upturned eyes. Like downturned eyes, it’s possible to have a specific eye shape with the additional characteristic of being upturned.
If you have upturned almond-shaped eyes, for instance, you have cat eyes. Cat eyes are almond in shape and turned slightly upward, similar to a feline’s.
6. Monolid Eyes
If you are of Asian descent, you are more likely to have monolid eyes. Monolid eyes refer to the appearance of the upper eyelid. Unlike hooded eyes, monolid eyes have plenty of visible eyelids. The eyelid itself, however, does not have a visible crease and is instead smooth.
Monolid eye shapes are perfect for trying numerous colors of shadow and playing with eyeliner techniques. The one caveat is that you’ll need to learn to “fake” a crease in your lid. In addition, you may also need to pay close attention to your lash choices.

7. Deep-Set Eyes
We’ve covered some basic eye shapes and considered how your eyelids look. Now, let’s look at the position of your eyes on your face.
Deep-set eyes are eyes that appear to recede into the skull. These eyes sit further back in the eye socket, behind the brow bone. They’re often referred to as sultry, seductive, or “come hither” eyes.
If you have deep-set eyes, you may find it hard to make your lashes look as visible as you want them to be. Because of the position of the brow bone, it may be best to focus on volume and less on length to keep your lashes comfortable.

8. Close-Set Eyes
The bridge of your nose separates your eyes, but some people have eyes that are set closer to the bridge of the nose than others. This makes the bridge of the nose naturally slimmer and makes the eyes less than an eyeball’s width apart from one another.
9. Wide-Set Eyes
Alternatively, if you have eyes that are further apart than an eyeball’s length, your eyes are likely wide set. People with wide-set eyes have a wider bridge and more space between their eyebrows.
10. Protruding Eyes
The opposite of deep-set eyes are protruding eyes. These types of eyes appear to “pop” from the eye sockets and are usually more prominent than a person’s brow bone. People with protruding eyes may have eyes that are naturally more open-looking and alert.
