Makeup Tips for Square Face Shape

Makeup Tips for Square Face Shape

A square face shape is characterized by an angular jaw and an even distance between the forehead and chin. If you have a square face, your jawline is structured, and your cheekbones are not much wider than the other parts of your face.

The square face shape is one of nine different face shapes that scientists have identified while studying human facial structure. Whether you have an oval face, round face, or square face, learning how to apply your makeup and style your hair can help accentuate your shape and play up the features you love the most.

If you’re unsure if you’ve got a heart-shaped face, oval face shape, or a square face shape, that’s completely okay. Check out our helpful blog to help determine your face shape.

If you already know you have a square-shaped face, follow along as we countdown our top five makeup tips and tricks for balancing an angular jawline and softening sharp edges.

Square Face Basics

People with square faces often have seriously crave-able bone structure. You probably don’t need to do a ton of face contouring to create the look of sculpted cheekbones or a more angular jawline because these features are already noticeable on your face.

Square faces often have such angular features that the goal of makeup application is to soften them. An easy way to switch angles? Blush application.

Applying blush according to your face shape can easily change the perception of your face shape and help you draw attention to your favorite features. We’ll explain how to apply your blush and give you four more tips about how you can add balance to your facial structure with makeup.

5 Best Makeup Tips for Square Faces

Celebrities like Olivia Wilde and Demi Moore have classic square face shapes with strong jawlines and angular cheekbones. Here’s how they, and countless other squares, play their angles.

1. Apply Blush Like a Pro

Blush can help add structure to your cheekbones or soften them. For square faces, we’ll want to focus on softening the facial features to create slightly more delicate curves.

For blush application, focus on making the apples of the cheeks appear rounder by applying your blush directly onto the apples of your cheeks beneath your pupils. Avoid spreading your blush outward, either toward the nose or the temple.

Placing your blush too close to your nose can make you look sick while sweeping it too far out toward your temples will accentuate your already angular cheekbones. For an even softer look, choose a shade that is slightly lighter than the color of your skin when it flushes.

2. Be a Bronzed Goddess

Bronzer can help create contour makeup without committing to heavy contouring. Heavy contouring is best left to professional makeup artists or individuals with about 100 hours of YouTube tutorials under their belt.

For the average person, contouring with numerous colors all over the face rarely works, even if you’ve watched a thousand makeup tutorials. Instead, you can end up looking ruddy or like your skin is dirty.

An easier way is to contour with a powder or cream-based bronzer. Choose a color that is slightly darker than your natural skin tone. Alternatively, you can use a concealer stick that is also about a shade darker than your natural skin color.

Using the number “3” method, sweep your bronzer along your hairline, beginning just above the middle of each eye and drawing your brush inward beneath your cheekbones, then along the jawline to your chin. Focus on applying the heaviest contour along your jawline, creating a shadow that makes your jawline appear softer.

3. Use Highlighter

Contouring is used to create shadow, and highlighter is used to create light. Highlighters will naturally draw attention to the area where they are applied, making them somewhat of a focal point.

Highlighting a square face will help draw attention to the center and midline of the face and away from the angular edges. Apply a highlighter in the center of the forehead (sparingly), the bridge of your nose, beneath the eyes, and the center of the chin.

4. Keep Your Lip Color Light

Of course, you can always try a bold lip, but for day-to-day, the best way to downplay an angular jawline is to keep your lip color light. Focus on shades slightly darker than the natural shade of your lips, and avoid heavily lining your lips, which can make them appear smaller and your jaw larger.

Balance the look by focusing the center of attention on your eyes with eye makeup and lash extensions.

5. Lashes Are Your Friends

Eyeshadow and mascara draw attention to your eyes and can soften angular edges, too, but adding lash extensions is an even easier way to get great eye makeup looks. You can even fake the look of eyeliner with Lashify® I-Line™ Gossamer lashes, which are perfectly angled to give the illusion of winged liner.

It’s easy to play up your eyes when you use lash extensions. Lash extensions can accentuate the eye area, draw attention to the midface, and create a softer look that is perfectly matched for square faces.

We love Lashify Fluffy™ and Fluffy FX™ Gossamer lashes. These lashes are soft, wispy, and fluttery and give you multidimensional volume that closely resembles salon volume lashes.

For an even deeper curl, the Fluffy FX Gossamer lash is your go-to. It features a stronger curl and a bolder lash for a look that is more dramatic. If you’ve never tried at-home lash extensions before and feel a little nervous about using them, we’re here to help

The Lashify Way

At-home lashes just got a glow-up. The Lashify DIY Lash Extension™ System was designed for both professional and beginner use.

It’s safe, hypoallergenic, and provides the same salon-like lashes you love without any damage to your natural lashes and without taking up hours of your time.

Our Gossamer Lashes

Our lashes are made from 100% Korean PBT silk, are cruelty-free, and use Underlash Technology™ to adhere to your natural lashes. This means your Gossamer lashes will be placed beneath your natural lashes, close to your waterline.

This method is both more comfortable for the wearer and provides a more forgiving application process. Gossamer lashes are designed like a hybrid cross between strip lashes and cluster lashes.

Each Gossamer has multiple lash fibers (depending on the volume) attached to a weightless Spine base that is a few millimeters in length. This allows each Gossamer to be supported by several natural lashes, reducing the risk your natural lashes will break.

Our Bonds

Unlike salon lash glue, which can contain harsh chemicals, we use Bonds to adhere our Gossamer lashes to your natural lashes. Bonds contain biotin and lavender and work more like a nourishing lash serum.

Our Bonds never fully cure like lash glue, which means they won’t cause your natural lashes to become brittle and break. Lashify Bonds are formulated with Microflex™, which allows your Gossamer lashes to bend and move with your natural lashes, keeping them safe and ensuring your Gossamers stay in place.

With proper care, Gossamer lashes can be worn up to 10 days, even overnight. You can wear and re-wear your Gossamer numerous times and combine different sets to create different looks.

Ready to get started? There’s no better way than with the Lashify Control Kit™.

You’re In Control

The Lashify Control Kit is the easiest way to get the tools you need to start your Lashify journey. It even comes with two sets of Gossamer lashes to help you build the foundation of your lash wardrobe.

Each kit contains:

  • Two sets of Gossamer lashes. Pick two from our Curl, Amplify, or Bold collections.
  • Fuse Control® Wand. Choose between the classic Fuse Control Wand or the Petit Curve, which works best for smaller hands and faces.
  • One set of Wandoms®. Lashify Bonds don’t fully cure, and they become tacky during application. Wandoms fit neatly over the tips of your Fuse Control Wand to prevent your Gossamer lashes from sticking to it.
  • Whisper Light Bond™. Our most popular bond, this dual-sided adhesive has a black end and a clear end. This dual-sided bond is perfect for application and for touch-ups, and it never leaves behind a sticky residue.
  • Glass Finishing Coat. The perfect sealer for getting long wear out of your lashes. You don’t have to seal your Gossamers, but if you do, Glass is a great solution.
  • Samples. You’ll get a sample of Pre Cleanse and Melt Away in each Control Kit. Pre Cleanse is our Japanese Cleansing Water that helps remove dirt and oil from your lashes and lids. It’s powerful yet gentle enough to be used as an all-over facial cleanser. Melt Away is our dual-phase, oil-based makeup remover that helps you easily slide your Gossamer lashes off of your natural lashes without damaging them.

Everything comes wrapped up in a protective hard case with a mirror to help you apply your lashes like a pro.

Hip To Be Square

Your square-shaped face is full of all the right angles, and you can play them up by softening their edges. Makeup techniques are a great way to keep your edges soft and your look on point, and adding lash extensions can complete your favorite look and add glamor and drama.

Lashify makes it easy to get the lash looks you love in less time.
