Cluster Lashes vs. Strip Lashes vs. Lash Extensions: What's the Difference?

There are four ways most people wear lashes: strips, magnetics, salon extensions and cluster lashes. They look different, feel different and fit very different lives. Here's the honest comparison, side by side, from the brand that invented the multi-cluster lash you apply at home.

The quick comparison

Strip lashes

Strips are the night-out classic. One band, on and off the same day. The trade-offs are the band itself: you can see it up close, you can feel it on your lid, and corners tend to lift by the end of the night. Great for an evening; tiring as an everyday habit.

Magnetic lashes

Magnetic lashes swap glue for a magnetic eyeliner, which makes them quick to put on. They're still a band sitting on top of the lash line, and you need the liner every time you wear them.

Salon lash extensions

Salon extensions are fibers glued to your natural lashes one at a time by a lash artist. They look beautiful when they're fresh. Then comes the cycle: an appointment to apply, fills every few weeks as your lashes shed, and a style you're committed to until the next visit.

Cluster lashes: why the original works differently

Cluster lashes sit between salon extensions and strips: the look of extensions, applied at home. But how they're made decides how they wear. The original, the Gossamer®, was engineered as a system in 2016:

  • A heat-fused Spine™ instead of glued fibers, so the base is thin, flat and light. With no glue in the lash, Gossamers are the lightest lashes in the world.
  • Underlash Technology®: worn under your natural lashes, which hold it and hide the base.
  • Bond and seal, not glue: a flexible bond, fused with the Fuse™ Control Wand and sealed, then dissolved with a remover.
  • Reusable: because they come off intact, you clean them and wear them again.

Many cluster lashes today copy the look. Few copy the system, and that's where the difference in feel and wear comes from. See the full blueprint →

Which should you choose?

  • One night out: strips will do.
  • Weeks without thinking about it, and a salon budget: salon extensions.
  • Salon-looking lashes you control: cluster lashes, worn for days, changed whenever you like, applied in minutes at home. Start with the Control Kit®, or the Pre-Mapped Control Kit if you'd like every length placed for you.

Questions people ask

What is the difference between cluster lashes and lash extensions?

Salon lash extensions are single fibers glued to each natural lash by a lash artist and worn until your lashes shed. Cluster lashes are segments you apply yourself. Gossamer® cluster lashes go under your natural lashes, are held with a flexible bond and sealer, last for days and can be removed and reused.

Are cluster lashes better than strip lashes?

For everyday wear, many people prefer cluster lashes: there is no band on the lid, they look like your own lashes and they last for days instead of one evening.

Do cluster lashes look like real lash extensions?

Gossamer® cluster lashes are worn under your natural lashes on a thin heat-fused spine, so the base disappears and they look like a salon set.

Can you reuse cluster lashes?

Gossamer® lashes are made to be reused: remove them with a remover so they come off intact, clean them gently and store them in their cartridge.

How long do cluster lashes last compared to strips?

Strip and magnetic lashes are worn for a day. Gossamer® cluster lashes are worn for days, and up to 2 weeks with the Lashify bond method.
