Makeup Tips for Round Face Shape

Makeup Tips for Round Face Shape

Your face shape? It’s a matter of science and bone structure. Researchers have determined nine basic face shapes, building on the four you’re likely familiar with. Joining the ranks of round, heart, square, and oval are new shapes: kite, heptagon, oblong, teardrop, and rectangle.

With so many face shapes, finding the perfect makeup application tips that suit you perfectly can be difficult. You might even find that your face shape is a combination of two shapes.

To figure out your face shape, you can use this tool. If you’ve discovered you have a round face shape, we’ve got all the tips and tricks to help you draw attention to your features, add angles where you want them, and create looks you’ll truly love.

Round Face Basics

Faces with a prominently round shape are characterized by softer jawlines, less prominent cheekbones, and a face that is about as wide as long. You may have full cheeks and a less prominent chin if you have a round face.

Having a round face means the ratio between your forehead, midface, and chin is relatively equal, giving you a great canvas for makeup and blush application. The goal with makeup is often to create more definition in the midface by making the cheekbones and face look more defined and giving the illusion of contour.

5 Best Makeup Tips for Round Faces

When it comes to makeup, our motto is to wear what you love. Take these tips and make them your own by picking the colors that suit you best and playing up the features you want.

1. Blush Is Best

Blush is one of the best ways to add definition to a round face shape. Using blush, you can create lift and definition that round faces sometimes lack. When applying blush to a round face, apply it slightly higher than your natural cheekbones, creating lift.

Using a blush brush about 1.5 inches in diameter, sweep blush on the tops of the apples of the cheeks, moving your brush outward towards the outer corners of your eyes. End the blush application just under the outside corner of each eye. This creates a more sculpted look.

Avoid applying blush on the forehead, nose, or chin, which will accentuate the roundness of the face. Instead, opt for a highlighter.

2. Highlight

Highlighters reflect light off the highest points on the face or where the sun would naturally hit the skin. And they are not just for ultra-glam looks! Highlighter is great for creating angles and adding structure to the face while simultaneously making your skin appear dewy and radiant.

Focus highlighter application on the outer third of the apple of your cheeks, the bridge of your nose, the center of your eyelids, and just above your cupid’s bow. This will help draw attention to the midline of your face, making it appear more prominent than the overall shape of your face.

3. Contour a Round Face To Create Angles

Adding contour to your skin can magically transform your face shape and the width of your nose and even sculpt your jawline if it is done correctly. However, most of us aren’t makeup artists skilled with this kind of high-level makeup application, and it can go woefully wrong and leave us looking like a badly colored cartoon character.

Even if you’ve watched numerous makeup tutorials, it can go wrong quickly. Instead, opt out of the heavy contouring and instead use a technique that works well for round faces and oval faces alike: The “3” method of contouring

To do this, you’ll want to opt for a light-colored bronzer or a concealer that is a slightly darker shade than your natural skin tone. Many people find a bronzer easier to work with for a contour shade and is more forgiving if you make a mistake.

Starting at your temples, follow your hairline down, sweeping inward beneath your cheekbone and sweeping back outward along your jawline to your chin, creating the number three. Blending is key to making this successful, so make sure you blend in the edges of your makeup so that the contour is visible but not defined.

4. Play Up the Eyes

Bold eye makeup can create depth and drama and give a round face a central focal point. This doesn’t mean you have to wear a smokey eye or tons of mascara to your day job, but it does mean focusing on makeup that makes your eyes stand out and using a more muted lip color to coordinate.

Start by focusing on your eyelid. If you have monolid eyes and lots of eyelid space, you can combine up to three eyeshadow colors to create a dramatic makeup look. For smaller lids and hooded lids, try combining two colors, focusing the darker color on the lid up the top of your eyeball and the second (lighter) color on your brow bone.

You can also try winged liner, which will give the illusion of lengthier, almond-shaped eyes and more definition around the cheekbones. If you aren’t great with eyeliner, no worries. Tip number five is here to help.

5. Use Lash Extensions

Lash extensions are one of the easiest ways to level up your look. For round faces, lash extensions can help make your eyes the focal point and even give the illusion of winged liner.

Using the I-Line Gossamer, you can easily apply lashes in varying lengths in a perfectly angled line, drawing attention to your eyes and help accentuate your cheekbones, adding structure to your face.
