If you already know you have an oval face, you can skip ahead to the next section and start using the makeup tips to highlight your favorite facial features. If you aren’t sure what face shape you have, this blog can help. It gives you simple solutions and guidelines to help you determine what face shape you have.

Now that you’re ready to start making that beautiful oval face shape shine, let’s talk about what gives it its characteristic shape and how to accentuate your features.

Oval Shaped Face Shape Basics

It’s often considered the most aesthetically pleasing shape. Oval face shapes are thought to have perfect symmetry.

Oval face shapes typically have more length to the face than width, with both foreheads and chins that taper. No shade to our square and heart-shaped face friends, but if you have an oval face shape, you’ve essentially won the universal face shape lottery.

Even with an oval face shape, there are some features you may want to accentuate. People with oval faces often have less prominent cheekbones, but it’s easy to add more structure to this area of the face with creative blush application.

Oval faces may also want to draw attention to the midline of the face, adding structure and lifting the cheeks, forehead, and jawline. That’s an easy task with a little highlighter and a bronzer to add contour.

5 Makeup Tips for Oval Face Shapes

Oval face shapes have it made; they can try on virtually any makeup trend and make it look iconic. Still, that doesn’t mean that a little creativity can’t enhance your oh-so-versatile face shape even more.

Here are five tips to make your oval face shape even more geometrically balanced.

1. Blush It Up

Blush is your bestie, no matter what face shape you have. The right blush application can give dimension to your face, add sculpted cheekbones, downplay angles where needed, and add a flush of color that looks young and vibrant.

For oval face shapes, we’re going to use blush to widen the face and accentuate the cheekbones, making them look slightly more sculpted and adding a healthy color to the midface. Apply blush in an upward, sweeping motion on the apples of the cheeks, using your eyes as a guide.

Begin your application just inside the inner corner of your eye (on the cheek) and sweep it upward and outward toward the temple, stopping just before you reach your actual temple.

Avoid putting blush on your forehead and chin, which can make it look like you’ve just run a marathon. Also, if you place blush too close to your nose and/or on your nose, you may end up looking a little sick.

2. Play With Contour

Contour is tricky. You can watch plenty of YouTube videos about contouring and still not truly understand how it works.

Contouring is a two-part process: one part creates shadows and helps recede areas of the face into the background, and the other part creates highlights that draw attention to other areas.

Most of us don’t have the skill level to sculpt and contour our skin on our own. If you use the wrong colors or place shadows where you should have highlights, you can end up with ruddy-looking skin.

Instead, try using a bronzer or a concealer stick and using an easy, universally flattering contour method called the “3” method. Start by choosing a color of concealer or bronzer that is about one shade darker than your natural skin tone.

Starting just above your eyes, trace your hairline down through your temple and beneath your cheekbone, then sweep back out to the jawline and trace the jawline to the chin. Blend in the powder or concealer so that there are no visible lines. This is an easy way to add a very light but effective contour to your skin.

3. Highlight Your Life

If you only have a few minutes to get ready and you don’t want to spend a lot of time with highlighter, a cream-based highlighter stick is your go-to. Sweep highlighting shimmer on the tops of the apples of your cheeks, the bridge of the nose, and just above your cupid’s bow to draw light to the highest points on your face.

You can also dab a little highlighter on the center of your forehead, but be sure you blend it thoroughly and avoid using any highlighter that contains glitter, which can make you look cartoonish.

We love an ethereal color for highlighter as opposed to pink or bronze, especially if you are highlighting skin that hasn’t yet been sunkissed.

4. Play Up The Eyes

All face shapes can benefit from making the eyes a focal point. You can do this easily by adding dramatic eye makeup and/or by using lash extensions.

For oval face shapes, a great way to add width to the midface is by using winged liner or cat-eye eyeliner. Extending your liner just past the corners of your eyes can give the illusion of a slightly wider look. If you have a lot of eyelid real estate, you can mix and match eyeshadow colors to draw more attention to your eye area.

You can always fake it with lash extensions if you aren’t great with liquid liner or find eye pencils problematic. The Lashify I-Line™ Gossamer lash set is our first pre-mapped set of Gossamer lashes that is designed to look like winged liner without the work of actually applying eyeliner.

In fact, extensions can not only save you from eyeliner woes but completely replace your mascara routine, too.

5. Be Bold With Extensions

Lash extensions can bring depth and dimension to your face and help accentuate your entire eye area. The problem is that you can end up paying a fortune and spending a lot of time in a salon chair if you get them professionally done. An initial application can cost between $250 and $500 and take as much as three hours to apply.

Instead, you can DIY your lash extensions at home with Lashify.

Get Lashy

The Lashify DIY Lash Extension System™ makes it easy and convenient to get the salon lashes you love in the comfort of your own home and in as little as 20 minutes (about 30 if you’re a first-timer).

If you’ve tried at-home lashes before, clear those (probably not-so-great) memories out of your head. Everything about Lashify is different.

Gossamer Lashes

Our Gossamer lashes are 100% cruelty-free and made from Korean PBT silk. They are designed to be worn across several natural lashes, which helps spread the weight of voluminous sets and makes them more comfortable.

Gossamers are applied using Underlash Technology™, allowing them to be adhered beneath your natural lashes, close to your waterline. This makes application easier and more forgiving if you don’t get them placed as precisely as you’d like.

Bonds

We don’t use lash glue. Lash glue can contain chemicals that are toxic and irritate the skin and natural lashes. Our Bonds contain biotin and lavender, which support your natural lashes while you wear your Gossamer lash extensions.

Our Bonds also never fully cure, which means they won’t make your natural lashes brittle and cause them to break. Because they get brittle, you’ll notice they become tacky during application. This is normal and important for proper Gossamer adherence.
